What's New:
The Eleventh Judicial Circuit’s ruling of May 7, 2008 on the 300 Grove Bay Residence issue was a true victory for all the neighborhoods of Miami, whether in the Grove, Upper Eastside or Flagami. We must never forget the context of the neighborhood. High rise condominiums belong downtown.

In Miami we are never all going to agree, that is why we act collectively as a commission. No man is an Island and none of us are trusted to act unilaterally but must form consensus amongst our colleagues. We collectively act as a Commission and each Commissioner is an individual that is elected by his/her district, with each District Commissioner charged with the safe keeping of his/her neighborhoods. We must learn to act collectively in the best interest of the City…the dividing line between City’s interest and District’s interest can be difficult to distinguish at times. We now find ourselves in trying times, a slowing economy and the real difficulties of making ends meet for some and cutting back for others.

We have just witnessed explosive growth; we must now manage that growth with all the stewardship that we can muster collectively as a Commission. Our focus must be on jobs and job creation. We must suppress our parochial interests and do what will preserve and bring jobs to the City of Miami. We have an opportunity for job growth with the Marine Industry, an industry we have long ignored and allowed to move to points north. On the horizon is the Flagstone Mega Yacht Port facility, on Watson Island (Island Garden) that will be breaking ground shortly, inviting mega yachts to make the City of Miami their port of call. The Port of Miami River provides a great opportunity for marine growth, in terms of the maintenance and servicing of these Yachts. By creating the luxury condominium market we have created the perfect scenario for the Mega Yacht owners to maintain second residences while enjoying the use of their yachts. Marine workers are higher wage earners in comparison to the Dade County mean wage.

We equally have an opportunity for jobs in the Biotech Industry with the building of the University of Miami Biotech facility. Finally we have the ability to build and create a world class Convention Center with the Falcone Group in downtown Miami. We need to lead the way towards our job growth vision, understanding we need immediate attention to our infra structure, as well as a more robust mass transit system. We have the ability to live/work and we must encourage those who do not need cars to make their way without cars. Ridership is up in every major City’s mass transit system. Now is not the time to cut any Metro service or Tri-Rail service, now is the time to encourage those who never considered public transportation to make a cost effect decision.

The appellate court’s decision should close the chapter to high rise development in our neighborhoods and allow us to focus on the creation of jobs.
